MUMBAI: Radioandmusic’s new initiative Connex, a competition that celebrates  contribution of people from the radio industry, spanning in seven categories, is like International Radio Festival; giving a platform for Radio Jockeys. RJ Siddharth of 92.7 Big FM was the chosen representative in the year 2015, from India, at the IRF. To represent one’s country on an international forum is always an honour and RJ Siddharth agrees with the same.

“It was indeed an honour to be selected from so many RJs in India. It also gave an opportunity to meet RJs across the world. It was like a cultural pot, where people from various culture and ethnicities come and meet. Therefore, it is a great learning experience,” reminisces Siddharth.

He went and presented Hindi Film Music to foreigners, who were stunned by the expanse of it. Although, it was nothing short of challenge for the RJ. He shares, “It was challenge but an interesting one. I took them through the repertoire of Hindi Film music from early 50’s till now. Explaining them how greats like Salil Chowdhary and R D Burman were in tune with western music too, was interesting to both, me and the audience. I also tried explaining how with times sounds have changed in India too.”

What amused the international audience was the fact that there is a separate genre called Bollywood music, says Siddharth. “There were RJs from Italy and UK and so many other countries and all of them were amazed to know the sheer popularity Bollywood music enjoys in India.”

The RJ also feels that he also got acquainted with advanced sound system, when he went there. “I can’t recall the exact name of the system and software, but they used this particular software, which was extremely handy. The interface is different and it was not for recording but for live performance.”

He also had a fan boy moment there, when he met his favourite and the most famous RJ in the world, “Apart from meeting some really amazing RJs all across the world, I got an amazing opportunity to meet Tony Prince. The best part was, when the Bollywood music was on, he started to dance on Laila Laila song. This was certainly a memorable moment.”

RJ shares that such initiatives are beneficial for both the RJs and radio stations, “Such platforms give you global exposure.”

Drawing a parallel with RadioandMusic‘s Radio Connex, the RJ says, “Radio and Music always comes up with innovative enterprises. This, too, is an excellent platform for the RJs. I always follow the work done by Radio and Music.”

Considering the next IRF is scheduled soon in October 2018 in Malta, RJ Siddharth was asked, what the one tip, he would like to share with the new representative from our country. On this, he said, “I think all the RJs are smart and they know their work. All I can suggest is be yourself and make your own format.”

He signs off saying, “Ï think Annu Kapoor should represent India at the next IRF. I really like him.”

RED FM draws eyeballs with its mission #HillJaoge at Mount Ghazipur

$

MUMBAI: In an endeavour to drive awareness and initiate action by authorities, for Delhi’s biggest trash yard- Ghazipur; one of the largest and most awarded radio station network in India, 93.5 RED FM undertook the issue in an unconventional truly Bajaate Raho manner.

The garbage area in Ghazipur, East Delhi is a hill that no Delhi’ite is proud of. It was supposed to be any normal dump yard but because of the irregularities and shifting blame game amongst the authorities, the trash yard has now grown taller and is almost at par with the height of Qutub Minar. According to the government the garbage pile has become a hill that has now reached up to 65 meters, which was initially prescribed to the limit of 20 meters. This hill has become extremely hazardous for people, who live near the area as it emits harmful methane gas which causes serious irritation in eyes and breathing problems which ultimately damages the lungs. The situation gets even worse during the rainy season, when the stench grows stronger and leachate from the trash site enters adjacent canals.

To draw eyeballs, drive awareness, provide respite to the growing nuisance of this neighbourhood and ensure the right authorities are reached, Delhi's most recognized mountaineer face Akash Jindal along with RED FM’s RJ Raunac aka Baua climbed the hill to conquer and capture the essence of #HillJaoge. #HillJaoge is a pun in many forms- one this hill will make you move with all the menace it comes with, two this hill should go and give the area a much needed cleaner hygienic environment. RED FM, known for its innovative initiatives, trekked up this garbage hill under RED FM’s Mission Mount Ghazipur campaign. The approach was that of climbing a genuine mountain, with gears and a base camp set up. A flag too was raised once the summit was conquered with ‘Who is responsible?’ written over it to really question and provoke the citizens as well as the authorities.

Commenting on the initiative, RED FM COO Nisha Narayanan said, “At RED FM, we constantly look at ways to raise a voice and drive awareness for issues and challenges faced by our listeners in the cities. #HillJaoge is yet another disruptive initiative that will encourage the citizens to keep the city clean and hopefully not only get rid of the stench, but also get rid of this garbage hill at Ghazipur and all the hazards that comes with it. This initiative is a larger appeal to Delhiites. If at a grassroot level, we begin to segregate dry and wet waste at home itself that is half the problem solved.”

He said, “We were very happy to introduce Radio Connex as a property, this year, because I believe that radio has been playing a very important role in creating new advertising formats. Neither do the agencies nor do the brands understand, how to treat radio stations, though they work closely with them.”

“We wanted to discover the best ongoing practises and encourage even better practices in terms of radio advertising, servicing clients and offering them 360 degree solutions. We were very careful about the categories; we have put up and have focussed on Community Radio Stations, 360 degree ad solutions, in house ad developed for clients. We really want to bring out the best from radio and also highlight the use of radio as a communication medium to select communities, who are really tuning in,” CEO and founder of Indian Television Dot Com group Anil Wanvari added.

The other juries, who graced the occasion, also expressed their views, both, about Radio Connex 2018 and its Jury Meet.

Hyper Active founder and chief creative officer K.V. Sridhar “I think it’s a very good initiative, which has got beautifully sorted categories. As any jury and award show, you will see some good work, some not so good work. As a group, we tried very hard to curate the best work throughout the day and tried mentoring the video. One little advice I wanted to give to all the audience as well as to the entering agencies, ‘if you bring your story in a much better way, present it well and get entered in an appropriate category, your chances of winning will be much higher’.”

Celebrated Ad Film Maker Prahlad Kakkar said, “Radio Connex is the most comprehensive one, I have come across, in terms of awards, appreciating the depth and quality of radio in this country as well as its growth. You have an award function, which is really to reward the kind of endeavour and effort that has been put in the industry as a whole and not individual people only.”

“It’s a great initiative and I am happy to be a part of it. One thing, I liked in particular about Radio Connex is the Community Radio angle. It’s a great way of recognising this medium. Also, it is a cause driven and not a commercial initiative, which is putting them on a platform and giving them recognition, which is great. You guys have done a good job,” said Founder and Managing Director Y&A Transformation Pvt. Ltd S. Yesudas.

Rajeel Sayani, who is the son as well as Manager of the legendary Indian Radio announcer Ameen Sayani also, was impressed by Radio Connex 2018. He exclaimed, “It’s a great initiative. What attracted me at the beginning was the design of the emblem, after which, I started going in detail about the event and its categories.”

On the various social campaigns evaluated, Sridhar had a favourite as he shared, “It’s an universal truth that I am involved with Laadli for last 14 years. So, my heart goes to anything that has to do with women. I think the entire debate on the menstrual cycle in the community radio was a fantastic piece. Also, this kind of dialogue needs to happen at every stage, home and village. I think community radio is a big thing and if you can open a dialogue there, you are taking progressive steps. Also, the other one that talks about transgenders was impressive. These are the issues, even in urban societies and work places; we escape from talking about them in the open. But, when we see these issues are discussed in open at a Community Radio, we can say that at last we are an open society.”

Prahlad also had a thought on the social campaign entries, sent by participating radio stations.  “We, as a country, have managed to put a satellite, yet we exist in the 12th Century when it comes to the way we treat woman. The medium like radio is accessible to everybody, who has a cell phone today. Also, when it comes to the reach, today, radio is the most powerful medium in this country, especially for social change. We have to open dialogue about taboo subjects like the way we treat women and girl child etc. that are preventing us from becoming first world. Also, one of the biggest reasons, in terms of our work force that is preventing us from becoming first world is that we have a very low opinion of including women in our work force. But, if we manage to do that, we will be much ahead of where we are today, “ he commented.

Yesudas, who liked two of the social campaigns in particular, from the entries said, “All of them were good in their own way. Most of the social campaigns and causes are difficult to be spoken in public. I particularly liked the menstrual one, which has got a lot of traction with a lot of conversations going on it. I also liked the SRS (Sexual Reo-orientation Surgery). For someone, who has gone through this surgery, to come up and talk about it in a community radio, particularly to a small community, where people know that person, is pretty challenging. Also, it’s a very interesting well-packaged content.”

Lastly, Sayani, “I think all of them were good as there were situations, which one normally doesn’t see covered in regular radio. When independent radio started, we were Radio City and there were several social issues that were not generally covered. It’s nice to see social issues be brought up and tackled too.”

The whole day-long event was held at WeWork, Mumbai. With a fabulous Jury Meet, it will be great to watch out for the actual event, which is slated to be held on 10 October 2018 in Mumbai.

MUMBAI: Ranjit Pathak, who is the programming head of Superhits 93.5 RED FM is quite confident as well as happy with their latest short story-telling show, Short Cuts, which is getting popular among the audience. In an exclusive interview with Radioandmusic, he talks about the bizarre concept, idea behind it and RJ Praveen, who is hosting the show.

“Short Cuts is a new form of story-telling in the history of Indian Radio. It’s for the first time, we have done a show, ‘jo aap sun bhi sakte ho aur dekh bhi sakte ho’, which radio has never seen before. We wanted to evolve to the next stage and give new offering to the audience,” said, RED FM Programming Head Ranjit Pathak.

“The stories are one shots that will make u think twice about your Radio listening experience of last few minutes. It is a collection of stories capturing different nuances of our society and captures various elements from the human life that makes it a roller coaster journey that life is. Be it a relationship, professional matter or daily routine, in the end, it will turn into something, which you wouldn’t expect at all,” he added.

On the idea behind creating this first-of-its-kind story telling format, Pathak shared, “We wanted to break the mundane and come up with a disruptive format. Radio is the most intimate real time medium, where listeners feel connected and Short Cuts is no exception. As everyone is running behind their busy schedule, we have tweaked the story-telling format to a swift one, accompanied by short films. Breaking the monotony of everyday radio sessions, Short-cuts brings back much needed edginess in creative story-telling.”

“It is all about creating meaningful content that revives the golden days of radio, when it was the ultimate medium of entertainment. Short-cuts is an inventive way of story-telling in digital age where both on-air and online mediums will be utilized for effective narrative,” he further added.

When asked about the key highlights of Short Cuts, RED FM’s programming head, who was earlier with Viacom 18 exclaimed, “The main highlight of Short Cuts is that the stories have a digital version (short film), so it is released on-air as well as on digital at the same time! Besides, it’s other highlights the fact that it has original stories with an unexpected twist at the end and are not bound to a genre.”

On the challenges faced, Pathak told, “The challenge was to do a whole story in a micro way, but that’s what the fun is also about. Short Cuts is a refreshing breather in between songs, ads and jock talk, spanning not more than two minutes, but with an impact which would stay on the minds of listeners for long.”

Popular RED FM Kolkata Radio Jock, RJ Praveen is hosting the show, which has managed to strike the right chord with the audience, for its unique concept. On choosing Praveen, Pathak proudly told, “RJ Praveen is well known for his story telling skills. His voice modulation adds life to the stories. One can visualise the incidents happening in front of their eyes on hearing his narration.”

He further said, “He has been awarded for his story narration for the podcast show, Ek Kahaani Aisi Bhi by the New York Radio Festival in 2015 and 16, Golden Mike 2016 and Asian Customer Engagement Forum Award 2017. There was a demand of bringing back stories narrated by Praveen. So we launched Short Cuts with Praveen, a more new age approach to storytelling!”

MUMBAI: The most certain way to stand out in the crowd is to be unique and innovative. Raman Raheja, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sports Flashes did exactly the same. In an array of the music channels, Raman identified potential in having an exclusive Internet Sports Radio Channel and launched in January 2016. Radio Connex 2018 has acknowledged the efforts taken by the channel and thus is nominated for the upcoming awards.

Raman shares, “In the West, there is a lot of consumption of sports news on Radio. In India however, it is not the same. Also, our nation is obsessed with cricket or as they say it is a religion. But, now interest in different sports is emerging too. Since January 2018, the consistent weekly impressions we have got is 4 Million.” Certainly, a feat for a new concept.

Raman continues about the merging scene, “Besides Cricket, we are also receiving an amazing response for the content on English Premier League. Football is definitely loved the new generation more.”

The persistent question would be if there will be music included in Sports Flashes, and Rama replies, “We are in talks with bands and artists to perform for Sports Flashes. However, the music will be limited to songs related to sports and no mainstream music. So, bands and artists performing for sports teams or team theme are what we would be interested in.”

About being nominated in Radio Connex 2018, Raman is excited, as he says, “It is an interesting opportunity to be in competition with mainstream radio channels. We are taking a pie from the Bollywood. Also, this is a platform for us to interact with some veterans in this field and understand their way of functioning too. Overall, it’s a great feeling that the industry recognises.”
