MUMBAI: Bollywood’s star director, producer and filmmaker, Karan Johar had made his debut, last year, on radio, with the remarkable show, Calling Karan on Ishq FM 104.8. Well, the good news is that the second season of the show, is coming back on-air, but this time has an addition.

While, the first season had topics of discussion like open marriages, LGBT, love issues and more, the Season 2 will cover these topics in a bolder way.

This time, all kinds of love relationship issues with broader topics will be heard on-air. Karan Johar will, surely, be that one friend; you would like to share your problems with because he would have answers to all.

It is learnt that the Ishq FM team did have plans of coming up with the next season, but not so soon. But, it was Karan, who insisted to prepone the launch! The director is surely in love, with the space, he is cherishing, on-air.

On being asked about, what made the team come up with the second season, Ishq FM spokesperson said, “The response of the first season was unexpected. It was picked so well and became one of the most talked about shows of the town. Karan, himself, gives so much content that nothing is scripted, but comes out naturally.”

In addition to the launch, the team has arranged a conference, which will be India’s first every love conference. It will be held on 6 August 2018 at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, Bandra.

There will be a panel discussion, comprising of Karan Johar, Neha Duphia, Malini Agarwal, Imtiaz Ali, who will talk on modern day love issues. Post this; there will be a stand-up act by Anirban Dasgupta and a musical performance by Jonita Gandhi.

We all know that having Karan Johar, on a show, with this format is, indeed, a task. And, everyone might be curious about the making of this show that talks about love life issues. Hence when we asked the makers about the same, the spokesperson revealed, “Calling Karan is a pre-recorded show because getting Karan’s dates is difficult. So the team has callers who WhatsApp their number and then the backend team go through a precise profile check and then the callers are lined up. The show is shot for five days and each day around five to six episodes are recorded.”

The season is set to begin from 13 August and will be aired from Monday to Friday at 8 – 10 pm and repeat at 10 – 12 pm.

We will always have a huge percent of local content besides Bollywood: Nisha Narayanan

MUMBAI: Boasting of the tagline, ‘Bajate Raho’, RED FM, which is one of the ever-shining radio stations of India, has made its mark in the radio industry. From being categorized as the ‘Contemporary radio station’ to being known for their local content, they have mastered it all.

With the tagline, ‘Bajao For A Cause’ Red FM has supported campaigns like the ‘Palna initiative’, which took a call on ‘Child welfare’ and ‘Ek. No Wall’ that spoke about the common sanitation problem, through Malishka’s Pothole song. Besides, RED FM has always stood up for many such campaigns, which are a ‘common man’ concern. In an exclusive interview with Radioandmusic, RED FM COO Nisha Narayanan talks about RED FM’s focus on local content, social campaigns, Musicom Season 2 and more.

When it comes to RED FM’s brand philosophy, Nisha Narayanan broadly explains, “We, as an FM channel, are local in nature and as a network, you can’t ignore the ‘local’ concern. So the endeavor is to take up things, which are affecting people and, therefore, raise it and bring it to the notice of everyone. We will always have a huge percent of local content besides Bollywood.”

She exemplifies, “Malishka’s pothole campaign, which we had done this year also, has generated a great response. The response clearly is about what people are going through. We have been trying to articulate the message, we want to convey in a musical or a digital form.”

Further speaking about campaigns, RED FM, recently, has got associated with the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation, which is dedicated to the eradication of child labour and exploitation by educating and mobilizing the public. They believe in engaging the private sector to prioritize children in their business models, building the capacity of on-ground partners and advocating for the protection of children in national and international policies.

On associating with this foundation, Nisha Narayanan says, “It was a brilliant initiative for a happy childhood and was a part of ‘Bajao For A Cause’ campaign. Every year, we do a ‘Bachpan Bajao’ for a cause and we take up these issues. So, this year, it was in association with the Kailash Satyarthi Foundation. RED FM has been very close to causes related to children. This cause is a ‘Bachpan Bachao’ fund, wherein we decided to tie up with them against child labour. So, I think, as a medium, radio is a very powerful one. I don’t want to call these ‘social’ issues anymore these are basic concerns. Child labour is one of the biggest tragedies in our country and we should raise these concerns.”

This year, RED FM is also associated with Satyarthi’s foundation to raise funds for ‘Surakshit Bachpan’, where listeners can donate.

When asked about the support RED FM gets when they come up with something like this, Nisha told, “The government is very supportive of these campaigns and, in fact, they have gone out of their way to be supportive to all these concerns and causes, we do.”

Apart from the above, RED FM is also prepping itself up for its IP Musicom Season 2, which happens to be a concoction of music and comedy. This season will showcase Indian stand-up comedian Kanan Gill, along with the young band, ‘When Chai Met Toast’. They will travel across five different cities that will kick-start from Delhi NCR. The tour will, later, head to Chandigarh, Bhubaneshwar, Indore, and end in Mumbai. The tickets are priced from INR 750 onwards.

Nisha spoke about the upcoming Musicom Season 2, as she said, “The objective is to get entertainment and live events into smaller areas and also to work very closely with artist, brands and curating innovative properties. Nonetheless, we also want to focus a lot on regional/vernacular content. We do big-ticket events that are bigger concerts, with an audience of 15000-20,000. We also believe in doing smaller, ticketed, activities, which are more auditorium based. Comedies and music are a great genre. Hence, we thought of marrying these two and bringing them together.”

The last Musicom Season 1 had Independent bands like Indian Ocean, but this time it’s Chai Met Toast. On this, Narayanan added, “We will definitely focus on independent music and bands as well. I think, the Independent music scene is a very strong space. There is brilliant music that comes out. At radio, we are, often, blamed for not playing independent music in our regular playlist, but I think RED FM is making that effort to support independent music industry. We are looking for, both, original bands and music. The objective of Musicom is also to work with bands that create original music."

On the roadmap of RED FM, Nisha Narayanan revealed, “The roadmap clearly, at this point, is on expansion, where we are launching all new stations. Primarily, we are also trying to consolidate our different verticals, whether it is on ground, also, digitally. Also, in terms of digital, Red FM digital space is growing at a very fast pace. We are trying to see what we can do bigger and better in the digital space.”

She further revealed that RED FM wouldn’t repeat what they have done earlier. “We have tried and tested new things and initiatives. We need to create new IP’s and verticals. Innovation is integral to all of this. I want to create new ideas, think out of the box, which is our focus. So, we are not only expanding but also consolidating our market on the other side. And yes, as far as the revenue focus is considered, we definitely need to increase our revenue generation. Thus, looking at our revenue generation, in terms of content, digital, on ground, is our focus area, in terms of business too," mentioned Nisha Narayanan.

RED FM has also been, quite, busy in terms of network expansions, “We have launched one station at Dehradun and a retro one (Magic FM) in Hyderabad. We have also launched a few more in Dhule, Muzzafarpur and are yet-to-launch more of them, which are in the process," she added.

Lastly, Nisha Narayanan dropped hints about RED FM coming up with something on 15 August, which would be a multi-city campaign in the market.

MUMBAI: Storytelling and radio have been well connected since the inception of radio. The listeners love listening to unique and meaningful stories, which have a great message to it. Over the years, the process of storytelling took new looks. And, the latest addition to this is Short-cuts by RED FM.

Well, the makers of RED FM have launched a very interesting concept. This is not an ordinary story-telling show.

“Stories have always been connected to the audience, so thought of getting one show back on the same, but with a different format. So Short-cuts was the idea because time is running too fast and people have no time for attentive listening for an hour or so,” says the narrator, RJ Praveen.

Short-cuts is a small two-minute segment, where RJ Praveen, from RED FM Kolkata, will narrate the story based on real-life incidents.

“Basically the story will be fictional while the plot will be based on a real-life story. We have worked on the story backwards. This segment has no time limit and it will be played around 10-12 times a day. But I must say, these stories will leave the listeners with a thought and speechless at the end,” Praveen adds.

Commenting on the programme RED FM COO Nisha Narayanan says, “Story-telling and audio narratives are back with a bang and listeners are looking forward to exciting storytelling formats on radio. With, our previous storytelling programmes like Ek Kahani Aisi Bhi and The Headphone Show being widely appreciated by our listeners, we thought of innovating in the storytelling format with Short-cuts. With most listeners running behind their busy schedules, this time we have tweaked the story-telling format to a swift one, accompanied by short films for every story on the digital platform. The two minutes stories will have twisted and exciting endings.”

A team of five works on these stories at the Kolkata station, which is, then, shared to all RED FM stations. Stories are worked on each day and by the end of the week, there are eight story ideas, out of which, the top three are selected. Every Monday, three new stories are released on-air, which is on rotation for the entire week.

The stories will not just be limited to the audio vision. Interestingly, the stories will also have a visual format, where the entire plot is enacted and is available on RED FM’s Facebook page.

It’s been four weeks since the segment has begun and the response is amazing. There are listeners sharing their stories to RED FM and Praveen, via, Facebook, is asking them to get featured.

At IRF there are a lot of learnings that can be taken from an international point of view: Nisha Narayanan

MUMBAI: The ninth edition of International Radio Festival (IRF) 2018 to be held at Malta  promise to bring the global radio broadcasting community together to share knowledge and network. India too has been associated with IRF for a while now, with some of our best RJs having participated in this global affair.

To understand the importance of IRF for Indian radio we reached out to RED FM COO Nisha Narayanan who gave her inputs.

She said, “IRF space is looking at only the programming part and internationally the radio business. There are a lot of learning’s that can be taken from an international point of view. I think it’s good to have global exchange platforms, the primary reason being it is not just programming or it is not just created rendition it is also about how we run and look at business itself. There are newer stations and brands and more players entering the market, but I think we really need to re-built the way we look at our business.”

She further briefed on our country’s scenario, “There would be a lot to gain from IRF but we shouldn’t forget our local ethos. The ideas which can be adopted from International practices within the Indian radio is currently not possible because of the limits that we have for e.g copyrights. Our local concerns and policies are very different from international market. But ideas are welcomed, these kind of global platforms are very good to go but I think the basic kind of primary issue that hampers the growth of radio today is that there is a no proper measurement system within the industry.”

Lastly, she ends pointing out at the one positive thing, “Inspite of all of this radio is still the fastest growing media after digital.”

MUMBAI: RED FM takes a step in uniting the country with the Independence Day campaign ‘National Jock Exchange’. On this Independence Day RED FM’s most renowned RJs, from 14 different cities will cross the border of their state to explore a new city. India is a country that is the most diverse country in the world. The variety in cuisines, languages, cultures, traditions and festivals all of this is just phenomenal.

RED FM’s National Programming Head Ranjit Pathak says, “RED FM being one of the largest radio networks in the country aims to demolish this rhetorical question that a Punjabi is better than a Maharashtrian and vice versa. Commenting on the campaign, RED FM COO Nisha Narayanan says, “We belong to a country that is identified by its culture and diversity across the different geographical territories. With our station’s expansions across all markets, we plan to be united in any way possible. Bringing our IPs like MusiCom, Swag Fest and our on-air shows up on a national pedestal is a way to stand united as one network. Through this campaign we aim to unite our listeners and promote secularism and unity to sustain India’s democratic spirit as we celebrate India’s 72nd Independence Day.”

All the action will be captured live on the RED FM stations across states and geographies. Stay tuned to RED FM to know where your favourite RJs will be! Catch the action on RED FM social handles as well.
